| MARCH 1991 The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania came to represent religious expression there. After annexation to the USSR in 1940, authorities removed a small crucfix on the hill. It was always replaced. During perestroika times, multiple crosses were replaced for each one removed. Now, a cottage industry in crosses has developed.
