FEBRUARY 1991 MOSCOW A mother protests the status of her son, a conscript soldier, missing in Afghanistan since 1989, when the Soviet Army pulled out. She belongs to Nadezhda, "Hope," modeled after the Argentine mothers’ group. They began demonstrating here in the mid-1980’s, when it was potentially dangerous, and continue today, when it is utterly futile.
