AUGUST 1993 Demolition of the Komsomolskaya (Young Communist) Blast Furnace. Built in 1930-34, partly by international brigades, including Americans, this was the symbolic heart of Magnitogorsk. Some of its construction was photographed by Margaret Bourke-White, then on leave from Fortune.
